Pornic
Along the water on the Haute Perche Canal
Do you know the story of the marquis who wanted to turn Pornic into a small seaport for Nantes? Follow me and I’ll show you the canal he set out to build, to link the Loire to the sea. Be ready to explore the hidden side of Pornic – a quiet, natural site where flora and fauna have a field day, far from the bustle of the port. Our peaceful kayak trip on the water will take us meandering through the bocage along the last foothills of the Armorican massif.

All about the Haute Perche Canal
I discovered this green oasis by chance during a bike ride about twelve years ago. The towpath I was using had just been cleared. I was immediately struck by the peace, and the untamed, almost wild aspect of this little corner of the countryside.
Though a sea lover, I fell under its spell. I had been sailing and sea kayaking along the Pornic coast since I was young, and now I was discovering another world only five kilometres from the centre of Pornic.
Today, it’s my turn to introduce you to the Haute Perche Canal. I can already tell you that you’ll meet attentive fishermen, placid cows, kingfishers on the lookout and families of coypu splashing about, especially after sunset.
This little universe inside the multicoloured reflections of a ballet of dragonflies is like a corner of paradise on which the outside world has no hold. An invitation to play truant – or to travel back in time – awaits you at the city gates, and I’ll be there to guide you along the wooded canal.
While exploring the water, I’ll tell you its unusual history, as we paddle past the last remnants of former fisheries. The river is accessible to young and experienced paddlers alike, and is sure to reveal some of those secrets well-hidden by the holm oak’s leaves.
